Seder Moed: Pesachim Chapter 8, 87a-92b סדר מועד :פסחים-האשה
Basic
In this fourth blessing (but first request) we ask for daat which is the purpose of all intellectual pursuit—the power to know and want what is truly worth wanting. Daat empowers us to make our prayers real.
After three blessings of praise it would be inappropriate to suddenly jump into our wish list. We, therefore, start with praise and end with a request, gradually and humbly transitioning from praising God to asking of God.
You grace humans, that is, the people who already have foresight and insight, with daat, the power to know and want what is truly worth wanting. And You even teach insight to frail mortals, that is, those who have foresight but lack both daat and binah. However, we are lacking it all. We, therefore, humbly ask: Grace us that we may receive from You the power of knowing, insight and foresight.
Blessed are You … O how bountiful and abundantly present You are in our lives. O what an ever-flowing wellspring of blessings You are to us, YHVH, Timeless Ultimate Reality Who graciously bestows upon us right now and always daat, the power to know what to want and the ability to make our prayers real.
The more we believe that God is always sharing His intellectual powers with us, and the more we sincerely want to be enlightened, the more these divine powers can penetrate us and inspire us to pray with clarity and sincerity.
